Hardin County Schools Pioneering Enhanced Security Measures with New Screening Equipment

September 20, 2023 By Greg Milby

Introduction: In a proactive move aimed at enhancing safety and security, Hardin County Schools (HCS) is conducting research on innovative safety equipment designed to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors within their campuses. Central Hardin High School (CHHS) is set to host the initial trial, wherein the cutting-edge Evolv Express system will be deployed to screen individuals entering the school premises on Friday, September 22.

Revolutionary Security Solution: The Evolv Express system, an open-air kiosk, employs state-of-the-art technology to swiftly identify potentially dangerous items within bags and pockets, all in real-time. One of its key advantages is that individuals can pass through the sensors without needing to remove concealed belongings or separate themselves from personal items. If a concerning item is detected, the system’s green lights shift to red, and a photo of the individual with the flagged item is displayed on a tablet for further assessment by trained staff members.

Mission of Enhanced Technology: HCS Superintendent, Teresa Morgan, clarified that while no specific incidents triggered this initiative, the school district is proactively exploring options to bolster campus security. The primary objective of implementing this new technology is to maintain a seamless entry process for students while ensuring weapon-free campuses. The Evolv Express system is already in use at major sports stadiums, hospitals, amusement parks, and school districts, illustrating its reliability and efficiency.

Swift Screening Process: The Evolv Express system boasts an impressive screening capacity, able to process up to 3,600 individuals per hour. Utilizing sensors, screens, cameras, and AI-enabled software, the technology can instantly differentiate between a weapon and harmless personal belongings without relying on x-ray scans or facial recognition.

Pioneering Security for Schools: The equipment will be set up and demonstrated at CHHS, as it experiences higher foot traffic than any other school in the district, making it an ideal testing ground. By trialing this technology at CHHS, administrators aim to make informed decisions about its potential implementation across the school district.

Empowering Safety through Technology: HCS is at the forefront of adopting cutting-edge technology to bolster safety and security within its campuses. The video demonstration of how the system operates and what students can expect during the screening process is available on the HCS website under the News and Announcements section, providing valuable insights into this groundbreaking security initiative.
